In the warm, gooey center of May a few weeks ago, Philadelphia’s reliable venue Union Transfer was graced with the dreamy presence of French psych-pop act Melody’s Echo Chamber and led the city on a journey through the clear skies of Unclouded, their latest release, with Austin fuzz rockers Strange Lot as support. What followed was a night of eclectic psychedelia that “union” transferred the crowd from Philly to a faraway, kaleidoscopic soundscape for a few stellar hours.
Strange Lot took the stage first to warm Philly up, and their performance did not let up once; their set tastefully alternating between a fuzzy gallop that had every head banging and an above-mellow wave of psych that gave the crowd some cruise control. Their newest single, “Nobody Seems To Do The Math”, fell under the latter and received solid acclaim from the audience with its hints of mid-’10s Pond and Holy Wave. The band maintained the energy they set fantastically, leaving the crowd fully warmed up and anticipating their debut LP, to be released on August 14th.
Then came the time to enter the Chamber and be cradled into a sonic dream like no other. Melody’s Echo Chamber came locked in and immediately treated the audience to several tracks from the project’s fourth and most recent album, Unclouded, released in December of last year. Standout songs included “Eyes Closed” and “Childhood Dream”, and those titles ironically describe the vibe Melody Prochet delivered all night: closing your eyes as a child, entering a dream in media res, and gliding smoothly over a field of neon. Under the warm-colored embrace of the stage lights, the set continued its healthy mix of Unclouded features and songs from the Echo Chamber’s self-titled album, with crowd pleasers such as “I Follow You” and “Some Time Alone, Alone”. The result kept every single body in the house swaying in sync with Melody as if she were leading a class on how to groove in zero gravity, and Union Transfer certainly passed with flying colors that night.
