The War on Drugs made their long-awaited return to Delaware for a semi-hometown show, playing at the Queen just 30 minutes south of Philadelphia. The Queen was the perfect venue for the show; originally a hotel, later transitioning to a movie theater, the architecture surrounding the stage/ the acoustics are just gorgeous. Not only was the stage tight, having to fit seven band members, but so was their set. It’s natural at this point, having the same core band for over 10 years and with the more recent addition of Eliza Hardy Jones to enhance the live experience. The set starts with “An Ocean in Between the Waves,” a lighter song that really lets Adam shine on vocals. One thing I have always appreciated about the band is the seamless transitions they make during their sets. You get so lost you sometimes think it’s been the same song for three minutes, but in reality it’s been fifteen; sometimes you can tell even the band is getting lost in the music! Continuing on, they performed hits like “Red Eyes”, “Pain” & “Under the Pressure” that just made for a perfect night. This is a band where you can listen to and stream their music, but until you go to a show, you will never have the full The War on Drugs experience.
September 9th, The War on Drugs released their new single “Who’s That” after not releasing any studio work since their 2021 album “I Don’t Live Here Anymore”. “Who’s That” is not a phrase you’ll hear when a War on Drugs song comes on; having such a distinct, mystical sound makes it easy for the listener to know what’s in store. Fans were happy when the keys started ringing, with everyone but Adam initiating the song, many of whom had not heard it live before. Fans, even though the song was released only roughly 2 weeks prior, bobbed their heads, singing along like it's been in their live rotation for 5-10 years. TWOD are not shy about the vast amount of material to choose from when curating a live set, but “Who’s That” will be one that stays. Out now on your streaming service of choice!
