CheekFace is the epitome of modern-day Geek Rock, with a blend of rock background and fun, spoken-word-esque lyrics. They were opened by pacing, which was a great pick to get the crowd in a CheekFace mood. The three-piece band was awkwardly funny and got the crowd moving. I’ve never played patty cake at a concert before, but I wouldn’t mind doing it again! My favorite song of theirs had to be “Family”- a ballad inspired by The Sopranos. My theory was that it was written from Chris’s perspective, but I’m only on Season 2 of The Sopranos, so don’t quote me on that. To get back to CheekFace- they were amazing. They had so much energy on stage, and it was infectious. It’s like if the concert was Plague Inc. and the disease was fun! I got infected! In all honesty, their stage presence is amazing. The keyboard player was a standout, doing robot-style moves and jumping around with so much energy. The stage set up was incredibly dynamic, with so many fun lights and a giant cardboard pigeon (a reference to their album cover art). Overall, CheekFace was such a fantastic show that I would die to go see again. Next time they’re in Philly and you’re free, “listen to your heart” and GO!
