King Dunn - the band consisting and a namesake of two legendary musicians King Buzzo of Melvins and Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle is now on their North America acoustic tour with the support of another multi-instrumentalist J.D. Pinkus. All three of the musicians have been part of the legendary Melvins. On Sep 7th the stop was a perfect spot in Philly - Underground Arts and fans knew they were coming for an unconventional musical night. It started with J. D. Pinkus and just him. The stage was set with 2 big pears and some unique projections on them. His knowledge of different genres of music was reflected in each number as he was playing by creating samples/ loops, really interesting musical noises, and a unique way of playing his banjo. There was even an essence of Indian instruments in some of the songs he played. His setlist consisted of songs from the bands he played with - “Happy Cow”, “Broken Days”, and “Bride of Crankenstein”. The crowd was ready for the final act and without further ado, King Buzzo and Trevor Dunn took the stage. Buzzo with his acoustic guitar and Dunn with his upright bass created an intricate musical environment at Underground Arts. The focus was creating some music in its purest form with 2 classical instruments accompanied by vocals. The setlist consisted of some covers especially of Melvins and some original numbers created by the Duo - “Hung Bunny”, “Revolve”, “Sidewalk Begging”, and finally a cover of Kiss’s “Shock Me”. It was niche audiance who came in to enjoy the night and I am sure no one was disappointed. A shoutout to the Management, Publicists, Organizers, and the Venue for successful execution.
