Mastodon is touring North America in celebration of their latest album, “Marrow Deep,” with support of 2 great bands - Deahheaven and Alcest. September 22 at The Franklin Music Hall in Philly was such a night where 3 such bands were performing who has their own set of fanbases. Alcest, from all the way in France, is one of the bands in the world that has its own niche sound that blends post-black metal and shoegaze. Neige on lead vocals and guitar, Winterhalter on drums, alongside the touring members - Zero on guitar and Indria on bass were able to create a different atmosphere with the sound. The setlist consisted of songs like “Kodama” and “Eclosion”. Next was Deafheaven - I always feel that this band not only has a very interesting musical style but also that their live performances are something that the fans should definitely experience. George has got a different level of energy, and his crowd engagement is what makes the live shows really interesting. Ian, who is the sub for Shuv for the live shows, is another member of the band to look out for. Accompanying them, Kerry on guitar, Daniel on the drums, and Chris on the bass performed some of their great songs like “Winona”, “Dream House” and “Doberman”. Finally, the stage was ready for the Headlining act - The great Mastodon. The band literally needs no introduction for any heavy metal fans around the world. The tour was to celebrate the new album “Marrow Deep”, so they did perform a couple of amazing songs from the album. I am sure fans miss the legendary Brent Hinds, but it was compensated for with the addition of the 2 new band members - Nick Johnston on lead guitar and Joao Nogueira on the keyboards. It peaked with John Baizley of the Baroness joining for a few of the final songs. Brann Dailor on the drums and vocals, Bill Kelliher on the guitars, and Troy Sanders on the bass are true legends with their presence and consistently deliver great songs that blend genres like progressive, sludge, and stoner metal. The setlist definitely consisted of massive hits like “Blood and Thunder”, “Colony of Birchmen”, and “Sultan’s Curse”. Overall it was a treat for the heavy metal fans and we hightly recomment to catch them live as the tour continues. Finally, a Big shoutout to the organizers, management, and venue for the successful execution of the night.
