Smoke was in the air, and the funeral pyres were lit. Pallbearer came to Underground Arts and carried our souls to the next realm.
With Lástima, Philadelphia Blackened Screamo, opening the night, taking our souls from us before Knoll, Funeral Noise Grind from Memphis,  devoured our bones and ground our souls to shreds. Pallbearer, Funeral Doom from Arkansas, guided our souls to the great beyond by performing Foundations of Burden in full.
From the moment they opened, Pallbearer locked into their signature balance of melody and crushing heaviness. The guitars were massive but never muddy, each chord ringing with a mournful clarity. Brett Campbell’s vocals cut through the haze with a kind of fragile intensity, never overpowering the instrumentation, but always anchoring it emotionally. Live, his delivery felt even more vulnerable than on record, especially during the quieter passages where the room seemed to collectively hold its breath. Ending the night with their cover of Love You to Death by the legendary Type O Negative was definitely one of the best experiences of the night.
Underground Arts proved to be an ideal setting. Its intimacy amplified the emotional weight of the performance; there was no distance between the band and the audience, no barrier to soften the impact. You could feel the low-end rumble in your chest, see the concentration on the band’s faces, and catch the subtle shifts in dynamics that might be lost in a larger venue.
