Free at Noon, a classic staple of the alternative music scene, takes place weekly on Fridays at World Stage Live (formerly World Cafe Live). This past week, Illinois emo legends American Football took the stage before their headlining show at Franklin Music Hall, offering a taste of what an AF show really is.
From the start, we knew what to expect as American Football opened with “The One with the Piano” from their new album “LP4,” a sophisticated tone-setting intro that prepared us for what was to come. They followed with new tracks such as “Wake Her Up” and “Blood On My Blood,” and it was easy to see how quickly the crowd was won over. The sound was tight, in unison, almost like American Football never left. To close the set, American Football played “Never Meant” as well as “Honestly?…,” two songs that dominated their classic beloved debut self-titled album. In a room of all ages, you can see the impact those pieces of music have had for the fans of Philadelphia.
It’s always scary when classic bands come back with new music, as their latest full-length was released in 2019. LP4 fights and wins against all the speculation fans may have. If you still have speculation after listening to this modern masterpiece, go to a show and witness how important the music is to them, and how changing a set can be for you.
